Using deodorants and antiperspirants have become a regular part of our hygiene, but can we be so sure that they’re really safe to use on a daily basis? Researches have shown that some ingredients in deodorants or antiperspirants are harmful and are linked to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease. So to be on the safe side, using natural ingredients is still the way to go.

It’s true that perspiring is a very natural thing for us and it’s one of our body’s way of ridding toxins. But it’s also understandable that we would not want to smell or have wet prints on our shirt.

So anyway, what I have been doing for quite a long time now is apply corn starch (as antiperspirant) and/or baking soda (as deodorant) on my underarms. It takes some getting used to but it’s well worth it (no more worries about the side effects). I personally perspire a lot, so in case they don’t work on the antiperspirant department (which is fine with me), at least they’re effective in the deodorant department. But mind you, though, they will make your armpits turn white at the start so be sure to blend them in well.

For emergency shavings, I apply corn starch first before using the blade. That way, the shaver glides better and my armpits stay drier than usual.

By the way, local cornstarch and baking soda are fine. I prefer to buy our own because I know for a fact that the company behind the very well-known baking soda brand still does or supports animal testing.

hi, lani! the proportioning is really up to you. it's just like applying powder. i know that alum serves as a deodorant but not as an antiperspirant. the effect of cornstarch will vary per person. if you really perspire a lot and the weather is warm, it may not help much. but on cooler days, it's effective. some people don't really perspire a lot to begin with so baking soda alone can help deodorize. anyway, since both ingredients are really used in the kitchen, there's really no harm in trying them out. :)
