We brought our youngest son, DL2, to his pediatrician yesterday for his second PCV7 shot. At the same time, I consulted his doctor about the dry patches spreading on his body. He was diagnosed with contact dermatitis or what we all know as a skin rash. This is not the first time I heard of such diagnosis. Our eldest son, DL1, also had it before (more on him later). Anyway, the doctor asked what I used on our baby for his bath soap and lotion and I told her that I used Johnson & Jonson products. She told me then to stop using them on him because, according to her, J&J products are quite harsh on sensitive skin. It's funny she said that because J&J is known for their baby skin care products. But I agree with her. I also used J&J on DL1 before when he was younger and he had the same reaction, especially with J&J baby bath products. When I brought him to a dermatologist, she said to use oatmeal soap instead. It has a soothing effect on the skin and can prevent skin irritation. So I let him use my Very Oatmeal and it worked! The dry patches disappeared in time and he has never had them ever since. For DL2, the pedia told me to use Cetaphil Cleanser when he bathes. So far, I have not experienced any problem with the product so I have shifted to it for now. But for sure, once he's a bit older, I will eventually shift him to using Very Oatmeal as well. I am sharing this to all the mothers out there who're looking for the right product for their kids' skin rash. The answer may simply be found in a good bar of oatmeal soap. For those who may be asking, "Why did you use other products instead of your handmade soaps in the first place?" I used other baby products first because I thought it was too early for my kids (less than a year old) to use my handmade soaps. But come to think of it, if babies can use other regular soaps or cleansers like Lactacyd (the blue one, which the pedia also said was too strong for baby skin), why not my handmade soaps which are a lot milder and safer? Yes, I learned it the hard way, but for sure, I won't make the same mistake the third time, if we get to have another baby again. |
