ByNature Handmade Soaps

1.  If you noticed, especially during the rainy season, exposed bars “sweat” or get moist on their own.  That’s because they naturally absorb water or moisture from the air.  What makes this occur is the naturally-formed glycerin, a humectant, which is retained in every bar.

Humectants keep our skin moisturized.  So, whenever you use ByNature Handmade Soaps, you are assured of getting glycerin on your skin, leaving it moisturized all the time.  Other natural humectants are honey and castor oil which some of my bars have, too.

So the next time you see the handmade soaps “sweating”, especially during humid weather, you know that the humectants in the bars are doing their job.

2.  The longer the handmade soaps are air dried, the longer they last in the shower.  But they also tend to shrink and become lighter because the water continues to evaporate from the bar.

3.  Given that they are handled by hand from start to finish, imperfections with their shape and variation on their appearance per batch are normal.  Some bars may have unequal cuts, small holes, dark spots (from clumped up or not-thoroughly-mixed ingredients like herbs and spices), little dents or rounded edges, but they are still the same high-quality handmade soaps.  These little imperfections also make every single bar unique.

The bars’ tops are intentionally made to look uneven or wavy.  While some batches do get the right “look”, others still do end up flat. These differences also should not matter for they are only for aesthetic purposes.  Wavy or flat, the quality of the handmade soaps are not compromised.  Again, these little imperfections are what make these bars unique and they are not to be compared with perfect-looking bars we all got used to seeing.

4.  As I always tell those who inquire about the shelf life of my handmade soaps, “They will always be good handmade soaps (much better than commercial and herbal soaps in the market).”  Now, what may change in time is their scent.  Since some pure essential oils are volatile, their scent may become faint sooner.  But if the bars are kept with their wrappers (and stored properly), their scents may last longer, around 3-6 months or even more.

How to use and care for ByNature Handmade Soaps

1.  Keep them on a good soap dish (like ByNature Wooden Soap Dish)to prevent them from soaking in water. The bars do not contain hardeners, which commercial soaps have to make them last longer, so they will easily melt when kept in contact with water.

2.  Store them in a cool, dry place like your cabinet or dresser drawer, but make sure that moisture does not develop. Try adding 1-2 silica gel packs with the bars.

3.  Avoid exposing them to direct sunlight, but warm spots where the handmade soaps can continue to air dry is okay.

4.  Avoid keeping them in humid places or areas where moisture formation is prevalent (most especially variants that contain honey).

5.  Before using ByNature Handmade Soaps, cut them in two. Use the first half in the shower and let the other half continue to air dry (you can keep it in your linen drawer as a drawer freshener). The longer the bars air dry, the harder they become and will not melt as fast in the shower.

6.  To make a bar last longer while in use, lather it instead on a loofah, sponge or a small towel. I know it feels so much better to use ByNature Handmade Soaps directly on your skin, but this is just an suggestion.

ByNature 100% Natural Products

Shelf Life

The shelf life of my 100% Natural Products vary depending on the following:

  • exposure to heat
  • exposure to air/oxygen
  • exposure to light/sunlight

Since they all contain oils and/or butters, they can become rancid after a certain period of time, just like regular oils (e.g. cooking oils).  Frequent exposure to the elements above will even hasten their rancidification.  So, it is best to store them in cool, dark places. Storing them in the refrigerator when not in use can help prolong their shelf life, too.

From my experience (with normal usage), these products stay good for the given durations below (even without refrigeration). Again, it still all depends on the manner they are used and stored.

For BABIES (detailed info)

Baby Oilotion

This can be used instead of baby lotions, which contain a lot of unsafe ingredients for both babies and adults.  Baby Oilotion is also great to use for baby massages — a wonderful bonding moment for mommy and baby!

Baby Salve

Does your baby have diaper rash, cradle cap, insect bites, minor cuts and wounds, dry patches?  Baby Salve can help.  It can hasten the healing process or the period of improvement.

Lippy Pot Balm

Very safe to use on kids and even on babies to keep their lips from chapping or cracking.  It can also serve as a moisturizer on small areas of the body.

Moisturizing Insect Repellent (for 1 year old and older)

Keep your babies protected from pesky insects with Moisturizing Insect Repellent.  This may also be used instead of lotion, after every bath, and applied as often as needed.  If your baby is still below 1 year old, you may opt to use Baby Oilotion instead.  Its scent is a lot milder but can still help to repel insects.

White Salve

This salve helps prevent diaper rash from occurring.  So while your baby’s bottoms are still rash-free, start using this so they can stay that way — soft and supple.  White Salve can also serve as a facial and body sunblock for babies and aid in faster wound healing.
