White Board
Dec 14th, 2007 by ByNature
Below is a picture of DL1’s big white board. He has “graduated” from his smaller one which we gave to him last Christmas. He loves drawing and writing on it (note that I didn’t use the word “doodling”).
All at the age of two (2), he was able to learn to write the letters in the alphabet (yes, from A-Z) and the numbers 1-20. He also learned to draw different shapes, facial expressions, and round people (a circle with arms and legs but without a body, hehe!) just to name a few. He also already knew the concept of “a family” (he included DL2 in his drawings when DL2 was born
). One of his first drawings were figures of dolphins (without the fins, though), can you believe that?!
Anyway , this post is about something that REALLY surprised me and my husband.

If you look at the white board, do you notice anything?

No? Try looking closer…
Still don’t notice anything? Just look a little much closer…
Did you see that? Did you see the word “white board”? DL1 actually wrote that! He usually writes letters and number randomly, pretending to be writing something. But this time, he was able to write a real word. And not just a small word like “dog” or “cat” but “white board”! According to our house help, it’s not the first time he was able to write a real word. Hearing about that, B and I felt like we were in the twilight zone thinking, “Could this be real?” I also asked DL1 what those words written on the white board were and he said, “Constantinople and Timbuktu”! Well, with those words he didn’t quite get them right
Wow, that night, we kept taking pictures of the white board like crazy! It was something for me and B to be REALLY proud of and show off to our families and friends. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Makes us wonder what other abstract things may be going around in our little boy’s head. Oh, and did I mention that he’s only turning 3 years and 2 months?
By the way, as I’m typing here, he’s watching Dora with his MegaSketchers and drawing maps or whatever he sees on the screen.
You may still be wondering where in the world did he learn the words “Constantinople” and “Timbuktu”. Well, we have been reading to him “Hop on Pop” by Dr. Seuss almost everyday. He loves the book and I do , too! In fact, I grew up with those books. I like how the pictures play with the imagination. If you have kids around our son’s age, you may want to read them Dr. Seuss books. You’ll be surprised with the words your little one can remember just from listening to you read to them.
